Fast and pray for a breakthrough

Fast and pray today

Today, as in every Thursday, you are invited to participate in prayer and fasting to achieve breakthroughs in your journey with the Lord.

It's a partial (Daniel-type) fast, which means you can modify it, depending on your needs and schedule.

For example, you can skip one of your usual meals, or choose not to during a certain time, i.e., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. You can drink water, coffee, tea or juice during the fast.

This can help with prayer petitions for healing, deliverance, spiritual growth, becoming more attentive to the Lord's leading, seeking a closer walk with God, looking for a job, praying for the needs of others, and much more.

There are several references to fasting in the Bible, including Matthew 17:19-21 (NKJV):

"19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”

20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your [a]unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

21 [b]However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Fasting represents self-denial. It is not the fasting per se that moves the Lord to grant us His favor; it is the humility with which we approach Him, along with our faith in Him.

See Luke 17:5-6 (NKJV

"5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”

6 So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you."

Among those who fasted were:

Jesus Christ, who began His earthly ministry with a 40-day fast - Matthew 4:1-2 (NKJV)

"1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry."

Moses, who also fasted 40 days when he received the Ten Commandments from the Lord
 -
Exodus 34:28 (NKJV

"So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments."

Anna, the prophetess in the New Testament, Luke 2:36-37 (NKJV)

"36 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity;

37 and this woman was a widow [a]of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day."

Blessings to everyone, and may the Lord have compassion on us as we bring to Him our petitions.

Lord, we give you thanks for what you have done, for what you are doing and what you will do for us. In the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. - Amen!

Blessed be the name of Jesus Christ, who is worthy to be praised.

(Please pray for Jazmine, Patie, both to be healed/delivered completely of cancer.)

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is no small thing; it is everything

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is no small thing;
it is EVERYTHING

"25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?" - John 11: 25-26 (NASB)

And

"20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive." - 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 (NIV)

My prayer this season is for the Lord to open our spiritual eyes and hearts so that we can take in, perceive, appreciate, and understand to a greater extent, the magnitude of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and what it means for us today.

We need God’s help to understand what He has communicated to us through time, because otherwise we will be like those who consider the teachings of Jesus Christ to be rubbish. Or, like those who view His teachings as moral platitudes, and who view Jesus as only a wise prophet among many other “good” moral teachers that came to represent different religions.

In several verses of the Book of John, Chapter 6, Jesus indicates that we too will be resurrected like Him. At this stage, Jesus had not yet died in his human form. His discourse recorded in this book came before His arrest and crucifixion.

Generally speaking, and for argument's sake, most of us would agree that if God exists, then that He can do anything because He is God. This includes the resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, we ought to look further to understand that our eternal destiny is also tied to the Lord’s resurrection. The scripture states that we will hear our name called out from the grave and rise just as Lazarus did when Jesus called him out:

John 11:43 (NASB)

(43) “When He [Jesus] had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”

(44) The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
In fact, according to the same Gospel book, everyone will be raised again and brought back to life, to face the Creator.

John 5:28-29 (NASB)

(28) “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.”

Compare with the prophetic verse in the Old Testament Book of Daniel, Chapter 12, verse 2 (NIV):

“Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.”

Jesus, who came as Savior before, will return to judge all humanity. We are living in the era of grace, when everyone has the same opportunity to respond to the Lord’s offer of salvation, which is available to anyone who is willing to believe.

(The “good deeds” mentioned in John 5:29 do not refer to things we must do to “earn” God’s salvation, which is impossible. Salvation is a free gift of God. Jesus paid the price to make this possible for us.)

Jesus also gives us one of His comforting promises to us in John 6:37 (NIV) – “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.”

This passage in John, Chapter 6, continues with several references to our own resurrection. When Jesus mentions the same thing over and over again in the same sermon, it is probably because He doesn’t want us to miss the message.

John 6:39 (NIV)

“And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.”

John 6:40 (NIV)

“ For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

John 6:44 (NIV)

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

John 6:54 (NIV)

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

There is a last day coming.

Then, what must I do to be part of the resurrection to life in Jesus Christ?
How can the Lord forgive my sins?
How can I receive the Lord’s eternal pardon?

It’s this simple: Talk to Him about it. It doesn’t matter how old you are, your gender, your occupation, nationality or country, or even if you consider yourself an atheist – talk to Him. We can’t hide behind a shield of unbelief: atheism will not erase God.

“The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.” - Psalm 14: 1 [a] (NKJV)

Have a personal and honest talk with the Creator, right where you are. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. He is fully capable of responding to all of your questions, complaints, and hesitations.

Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Shalom and blessings to all of you

There are several things that can interfere with your healing

Hindrances to healing

Psalm 41:3 (NIV) -

“The Lord sustains them on their sickbed
and restores them from their bed of illness.”

Born-again Christians may encounter hindrances to healing for several reasons, but all of them have solutions, thanks to the finished work of the Cross. Christians who have called on Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior have the privilege of receiving healing for their illnesses and infirmities.

Luke 9:1-2 (NIV) -

“When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.”

Exodus 15:26 (NKJV)
… “For I am the Lord who heals you.”

Isaiah 53:5 (NIV) -

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

But, when healing does not occur, they may want to examine some of the possible reasons for why this happens. They can also ask the Holy Spirit’s help in the process:

Unbelief

Jesus Christ encountered and rebuked unbelief during His earthly ministry. He found unbelief, which is a sin, even in His disciples who were around Him the most and who had witnessed important miracles: The raising of the dead, deliverances, numerous healings, feeding thousands with a few fishes and loaves of bread.

[Not to get sidetracked, but it also shows that miracles will not persuade some people to turn to God. This kind of unbelief may be more tied to rejecting God’s salvation message because it implies repentance – giving up a sinful lifestyle.]

Here was the Messiah right in front of them, and yet some of the people who lived in those days chose, decided (an act of the will) not to believe.

Christians who struggle with unbelief for healing, or in other areas that include the many rich promises of God for His children, can do something about it. Bring the issue before the Lord. Tell Him honestly how you arrived at unbelief and why you hold on to it.

Mark 6:5-6 (NLT) – Unbelief hinders the ministry of Jesus …

And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Mark 16:14 (NLT) – Jesus rebukes unbelief
14 Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.[d]

Hebrews 3:12 (NLT) – The writer of Hebrews is speaking to “Christians”

“Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters.[a] Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.”

Confess and repent of unbelief.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you in this area and begin to search and proclaim scriptures that deal with God’s healing for you.

The healing may be instant, or it could take a while (God is sovereign), especially if you developed strongholds in your mind that cause you to resist using your faith for healing.
Remember from the previous session that the same faith that God gives us for salvation is the same faith we need to ask for and receive healing. Keep pushing through, fast and pray, and ask others to pray for you until you break through.

Unconfessed sin

Is there anything going on in your life that you are hanging on to and which you know displeases the Lord? Whatever it is, it is not worth it. Willful sin is open rebellion against God. He can’t bless us if we are involved in deliberate sinful activities. Satan will continue to accuse you of your sins to your heavenly Father.

Confess and repent.

If you are involved in a sinful relationship, i.e., an extra-marital affair, get out of it, fast. Sneaking off to gamble away the children’s grocery money? End it. You get the picture.
With the Lord’s help, you can get back on track.

Psalm 66:18 (NASB)

"If I regard wickedness in my heart,
The Lord will not hear;"

Unforgiveness

This is a big one. Jesus Christ placed a great importance on forgiveness, starting with the prayer He gave us which is known as the "Our Father."

Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV)

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT) –

31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.
32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Luke 17:3-4 (NLT) –

So watch yourselves! “If another believer[a] sins, rebuke that person; then if there is repentance, forgive.
Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.”

Matthew 6:12 (RSV) –

And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors;

Unprocessed pain

Hidden pain, buried deep inside, could be a hindrance to other healings. The effects of emotional trauma could be hiding in the background over the course of many years.

Proverbs 18:14 – (AKJV)

“The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity;
but a wounded spirit who can bear?”

Child sex abuse and family violence are two possible sources of hidden pain that has not been dealt with. Other sources include Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome from exposure to warfare, mass migrant displacements, and living through natural catastrophes, such as earthquakes and hurricanes.

As an example of lingering emotional pain, I know of someone who witnessed tremendous family violence as a child. The nearly forgotten trauma left a deep wound in this woman that didn’t come out until she was in her 50s. The experience allowed a spirit of grief to set in and continue for nearly a lifetime.

Counseling can help bring out these kinds of things, and so can asking the Holy Spirit for help. The Holy Spirit can put a light on these matters, and He does it only when He thinks we ready to handle them.

Isaiah 61:1 (ESV) -

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;”

Psalm 34:18 – (ESV)

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 51:6 (ESV) -

“Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.”

Pain can also set in and refuse to let go when people become angry at God because of the loss of a loved one – parent, spouse or child.  Some physical healings will come easier once the inner healing occurs.

Allow the Lord to do His restoration work in your innermost being. Let Him heal the broken heart and lift the depression that stem from a wounded spirit.

Psalm 23:3 (KJV) -

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

The occult

Playing around with Ouija boards, consulting mediums and fortune-tellers, seeking help from shamans who use occult powers, idolatry, seeking spells and curses against others, puts you in contact with dark satanic forces and defiles you spiritually. Add to the list involvement with secret societies and organizations that require members to take an oath to idols or an unknown god (Regarding oaths, see Matthew 5:34-37.)

These things can happen out of ignorance, but the Bible makes it clear that God hates these practices.

Repent of them immediately and renounce openly any association with these forces.

Through the blood of Jesus, we have been redeemed from the hand of the enemy.
Remove from your homes any books or objects or jewelry associated with new age and other occult activities.

Ask the Lord to break any curses you brought on yourself through such contacts. Ask the Lord to reveal any generational curses that came down the family line. (I’ve had people tell me that they have relatives, including distant ancestors, who were witches and shamans. In these families, sometimes new children born into the family are dedicated to “the dragon” or another satanic idol.)

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (NLT) -

“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there.

10 For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering.[a] And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft,

11 or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead.

12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you.

Revelation 21:8 (NLT) -

“But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

The Lord has given us authority to stand against these forces. You may need to ask a spirit-filled Christian who has a close walk with the Lord to pray with and for you. You might need a deliverance prayer. There is nothing impossible for the Lord. Remember that He loves you and wants to see you well.

Put on God’s armor every day

Ephesians 6:12-15 (NKJV) –

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of [a]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

Shalom to everyone!

Healing is one of the most requested prayers

Most requested prayer requests

Over time, I have come to notice that people submit similar kinds of prayer requests, and that some of them occur more frequently than others. Here is a short list of the most common petitions:

Healing - for ourselves or others
Death of a loved one
Emotional issues
Finances
Seeking a job

They come up in prayer requests at churches, and in social media, such as Twitter and Facebook.

Today, I will touch on requests for healing. Today is also this ministry’s regular focused prayer and fasting day. Because people in other countries read these posts and use the internet translators to see them in their own languages, I try to keep the language simple. I also try not to use expressions that we might know in the U.S. but that don’t “translate” easily in other languages.

OK then, the Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. He does not change. That is a wonderful attribute of our Lord and Savior. We can count on Him. And – you know the best part – He is always there, 24/7.

Personally, I have been healing in the past of several things, meaning that the Lord took the problems away. Sometimes, doctors helped. But the Lord helped greatly. Most recently, the Lord took away the arthritis that began in my life about six years ago. I told Him I did not want weather-related changes to affect my ability to serve from one day to another.

I also believe that we do not have to resign ourselves to certain chronic diseases because of our age, or because certain illness run in families. I do not believe that the Lord receives glory from out being unavailable due to illness. I do my part to stay healthy – eat right, observe good hygiene, etc., - but I could not wish away the arthritis. I also told the Lord that how can I pray for people to be healed if I am also sick. First, get well, and then pray for others.

Not everyone in the Christian world will agree with this viewpoint, but that was the little talk I had with my heavenly Father. About the month ago, I noticed the healing begin to take hold. After a few weeks, and after more fluctuations in the barometric pressure (which tended to trigger episodes), I saw and felt that it was gone, really gone! Praise be to God! As I get permission, I will share testimonies of healings of other people – to help boost your confidence in what the Lord has done and can do for you.

Why can we be healed?

Because Jesus Christ secured healing for us with His pre-crucifixion suffering, death, burial and resurrection. Even before that, we can see accounts in the Old Testament that the Lord has always been involved in healing humans.

Salvation is a package deal that includes healing and deliverance. Unfortunately, not many ministers teach that even though it is in the Bible. Ministers who point to the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ – and to the ministries of His apostles and other disciples – proclaim the Good News of salvation but leave out the healing and deliverance parts.

Some do it out of ignorance – they were not taught this in seminary or by church denomination. Some ministers find out on the job that it is true, Jesus heals and delivers today! Sickness and demons did not leave the world, did not stop attacking humans, when Jesus ascended into Heaven.

BUT – He gave His disciples the tools to handle it all: faith, prayer, fasting, Holy Spirit gifts. The Book of Acts describes normal Christian ministry, which included preaching or sharing about salvation, as well as healings and deliverances.

All right, what about the issue of faith?

I was one of those who in the past went back and forth on this …. I believe God can do anything – anything. After all, God is God. However, I did not always believe or accept that (1) was willing to heal and (2) I did not possess faith sufficient for healing. Let me deal with each of these two points separately.

One. Jesus Christ willingly suffered the brutal pain of the cross, and He accepted that He would have to die an unjust and awful death in order to save us. He knew what He would have to face when He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, and in light of this, He asked the Father to let the cup of sorrow pass from Him IF it were possible. The Father made it clear to Jesus that there was No Other Way. [Luke 22:39-44]

Here are several relevant verses that point to the healing power that Jesus obtained for us that address His willingness to see us well:

Isaiah 53:4-5 (KJV) -

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Matthew 8:6-17 (KJV) – Jesus was the fulfillment of prophecy

16 When the even was come, they brought unto him [Jesus] many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

Luke 4:14-30 (ESV) – Jesus begins His ministry, fulfills prophecy

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Exodus 23:25 (NIV) –

“Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you,”

Exodus 15:26 (NLT) –

He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”

Deuteronomy 7:15 (NLT) –
And the Lord will protect you from all sickness. He will not let you suffer from the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all your enemies!

James 5:14-16 (NLT) –

14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.
16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.
These are several – not all – the verses in the Bible about healing that show God’s willingness to heal us and keep us in good health. He is our heavenly Father, and why as a father wouldn’t He want us well?

Two. When my doubts overtook my faith, I tended to think that I should seek out Christians who seemed to possess greater faith to ask them for prayer. There is nothing wrong with asking others to pray for you. At times – especially when the devil has thrown negative things at us – we need that extra pat on the back and encouragement from other brothers and sisters in the Lord.

Be humble and seek them out when you need this. You can also ask Christian ministries and churches that offer prayer for healing to pray for you.

I have also learned, from my experiences and those of other Christians, that you do not always need to find that “super” minister with a supernatural gift of healing (the Holy Spirit dispenses such gifts as He deems appropriate), to get healed.

You do not have to travel across the country to get to that conference, or even travel across the city or region to find someone who believes God will heal you to pray for you. We do not have to travel farther than our home or workplace to find the Healer - God is where you are once you start praying to Him.

How much faith do I need to get healed? Use the faith you have.

The same faith you used to ask Jesus Christ to save you (salvation), is all the faith you need. Romans 12:3 states that God by His grace has given us all the faith we need.

Romans 12:3 (NASB) –
For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

Romans 17: 5-10 – (ESV) -

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Luke 11:9-12 (NKJV) –  Ask the Father for anything, including healing

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
11 If a son asks for [a]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?
12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

Romans 10:17 (NKJV) -

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Matthew 17:21 (NKJV) – Healing tied to the need for deliverance

“However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Important notes: It is not the anointing oil, or the fasting and prayers by themselves that help us to get healed – that would be superstition. It is our faith in God, and in doing what He tells us to do in His Word. It is faith in Him. It is faith in what the work of the Cross accomplished for through the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. When we pray, we seek to align ourselves with God’s Word – it is agreeing with Him in certain matters.

When we step out in faith – the faith He has given us – He is there at the other end to meet us.

Do not stop seeing your doctor or taking your medications while you wait on your healing. The Lord also uses medicine (Luke was a medical doctor). God can use anything. I did not stop take anti-inflammatory pills for arthritis until God’s latest healing was complete.

You can continue to search the Bible for instances of healing and verses that address healing. Our faith grows in this way or takes on greater confidence. Start with a few steps. Remember Peter, when he started to walk on the water … he faltered but he also tried and got to walk on water for a bit. The other disciples stayed in the boat.

Feel free to add your prayer requests here or to add your experiences of healing.

Blessings to everyone!
