Jesus Christ said "It is finished," and that is great news for us

Jesus Christ: It is finished!

John 19:28-30 (NKJV) -

"28 After this, Jesus, [a]knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”

29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.

30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit."

The most important declaration about God's redemptive salvation for humanity was spoken by Jesus Christ on the cross before taking His last breath. His resurrection was proof that indeed it was finished.

There is nothing more that we humans can add, no amount of self-effort, no pilgrimages, no ceremonies or rituals, no self-improvement courses, nothing else can be added to the complete work of Jesus Christ on behalf humanity. Apart from His first call to "repent," when He began His earthly ministry, this is the next most important message a Christian can receive.

To receive means that by faith we accept it, we believe it and we act on it. After we are born again, the process of spiritual maturity begins, but however long that process takes, our position in Jesus Christ is secure.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NLT) -

"8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.

9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it."

John 10:28-30 - (NLT) -

"28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me,

29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else.[a] No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.

30 The Father and I are one.”

God's salvation plan is complete. Once we understand - after it sinks in finally - that He plans to bless us - not just save us - we will begin to search His Word for everything that He wants to give us. Broadly speaking, it includes healing (of all kinds) and deliverance from the oppression of satan and his minions.

It is naive to think that Christians will not be attacked at times for their faith, but the Lord has given us the weapons with which to fight back - and win. We may be attacked individually and collectively (as the church).

The weapons are outlined in Ephesians 6:10-18. Wielding them requires faith and some maturity, especially once you step out to start helping others in these areas. Don't forget - the Lord does the heavy lifting. He has provided for everything.

Our part is to believe what He said He has done for us. The ramifications of this for all believers are enormous.

For example, how will you know what is in the written word to quote and proclaim if you don't read the Bible. How can you ask others to pray with and for you if you don't fellowship with other Christians? How will you know to do something unless you first learn?

You can listen and or watch this incredible music video ...

Blessings to all.

Being at peace with God is our greatest need

Peace with God is our greatest need

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." Revelation 3:20 (KJV)

This is one of those verses that I've read many times, and yet it never really "clicked." Mainly because it seemed too great and wonderful a thing, my mind could not understand the magnitude of its meaning. It's the same with other verses like the following:

1 Corinthians 6:19-2 (AKJV)

" 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s."

Romans 8:11 (NLT)

"11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you."

These scriptures are well known in the Christian community. I read them after I became "born again" and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. However, I understand them only intellectually, with a mind that still is undergoing renewal.

1 Corinthians 2:14-16 (NLT)

"14 But people who aren’t spiritual[a] can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.

15 Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others.

16 For,
“Who can know the Lord’s thoughts?
Who knows enough to teach him?”[b]

But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ."

Footnotes from NLT:
[a] 2:14 Or who don’t have the Spirit; or who have only physical life.
[b] 2:16 Isa 40:13 (Greek version).

These scriptures point to the fact that our communion with God is on a level of Spirit to spirit. When we being to understand the truth of these principles, and the light comes on, we are hit with the weight of the implications.

When we are born again of the spirit according to John 3:4-8 (ESV), we enter another dimension, a new life. The spiritual death that entered into the human race after Adam sinned, no longer has a hold on us. Once we see our rebellion against God for what it is - we are at war with God when we continue to reject His salvation for us - once we see the degree of our sinfulness - we start to realize our greatest need is God's peace to be at peace with Him.

John 3: 4-7 (ESV)

"4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?”

5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.[a]

7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You[b] must be born again.’

8 The wind[c] blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

This is exactly what I experienced when I got "saved." I felt a sudden peace with God - I had never realized that I (my soul) was at war with the Almighty - and I felt at peace with people in general. It's important - and we often forget this - to remember that other people are not "the enemy;" the enemy is Satan and the dark spiritual forces that do his bidding in an attempt to destroy us. (Ephesians 6:12)

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 New Living Translation (NLT)

"3 If the Good News we preach is hidden behind a veil, it is hidden only from people who are perishing.

4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God."

God's salvation for us is The Most Important thing in life!

My prayers are

 (1) for those who don't know the Lord to ask Him to reveal Himself to them, and

 (2) for those who are Christians but are struggling to maintain their walk with the Lord, to ask the Holy Spirit to bring to life the scriptures that declare that believers are the "temple" or tabernacle of God and all of what implies.

More, much more on these points later ...

Blessings to everyone

Christianity: How to strengthen the "inner man"

Strengthening the "inner man" (inner woman) - Part 1

I was talking to a sister in the Lord recently about the need to strengthen the "inner man" (our spirit), which is key to maturing in the Christian faith - it's a process - and it's how we become more able each day to resist temptations and increase our effectiveness as servants of the Lord.

At one point, I was ready to beat fellow saints with the Bible, urging them to get with God's program, and lead victorious Christian lives. Then, the Lord halted me and let me know that I was getting ahead of myself, actually, I was rushing off ahead of Him. On a personal note, one of the issues that motivated to become more involved in helping others is seeing how disease and sickness had overtaken many Christians. Peers and younger saints were reporting serious health problems and other setbacks. Some of them d attended charismatic or pentecostal churches for decades, and yet it seemed that they were hanging on for dear life. Some of them had accepted or were otherwise resigned to living with poor health. In my heart, I knew that was not God's best for His children.

Well, the Lord showed me that there are Christians, who through lack of practice, lack of consistency, failure to actively resist spiritual attacks, some out of laziness (rely on a single sermon once a week, and not pray and read the Bible as the Word of God shows us), or even because of a lack of knowledge, have become "weak." The apostle Paul admonished believers at the church in Corinth for approaching communion without first confessing their sins and repenting; in other words, they were not taking seriously the sacrament established by Jesus. Paul made it clear that the Lord takes spiritual matters seriously. That was only one aspect of their condition:

1 Corinthians 11:26-31 New Living Translation (NLT)

"26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
27 So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against[a] the body and blood of the Lord.
28 That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup.
29 For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ,[b] you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself.
30 That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.
31 But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way."

Their approach to Communion reflected their view of their relationship with God, sort of a casual, armchair approach ...

I include here a link to a good and succinct discussion about the "inner man." I'm not one to reinvent the wheel, so this link appears here for reading and benefit. https://www.gotquestions.org/inner-man.html

Strengthening the inner man is a lifelong process to help us become conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. This is a faith-filled process that involves salvation, baptism (a public declaration of our faith in Jesus Christ and separation from the world), prayer, fasting, reading the Bible, praise and worship, spiritual warfare, expecting God to speak to us, welcoming the Holy Spirit in our daily walk, fellow-shipping with other believers, and fulfilling the Great Commission (however God leads us to do this).

Strengthening the inner man also involves partaking of Holy Communion on a regular basis. If you do not have access to a church, or if you attend a church (which I did once) that observes communion only every few months, then you can incorporate communion in your home or with your Bible study group. Taking communion implies that you are turning over to God everything the Holy Spirit shows you that you must give up.

Sometimes it's "easier" to confess and repent of obvious sins, but the Holy Spirit will also convict us of negative attitudes that sabotage our faith, an unwillingness to forgive others, and so forth. We must say no to sin every day, until the things that try to hang on and trip us up drop off. We must say yes every day to the good things that the Lord has given us, as a result of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. By faith, we put on the righteousness of Jesus Christ, and that allows us access to the Holy God. We by ourselves will never be good enough, but Jesus is eternally good, and we have the privilege of putting on His righteousness (Ephesians 6:14).

Recently, I read a secular magazine an article that made a wonderful observation about love. It said love is something that you can give away without running out, if you expect nothing in return. Let's remember that we will never run out of God's love (for God is love - 1 John 4:7-8), so we can give it away endlessly. For example, if we decide to bless others, we will be less tempted to curse or make unseemly gestures at others who cut us off on the road type of thing ... you get the picture. Jesus said the second greatest commandment is to love others as ourselves. Love requires "action" if it's going to be meaningful. And we shouldn't do things only for others who can return the favor. Loves never runs out in God's kingdom.

Yes, we will fall at times. The idea is to get back up, shake off the mud, get right with the Lord and others, and continue on. Stay on track. That's how the inner man in each one of us grows and matures. No easy shortcuts. "Restoration" is another way to think of this process. Bringing things back to the way God intended them to function. The Holy Spirit needs to step in and do repair and maintenance, as we yield to Him, using the Bible as our authoritative source for the ongoing job.

I pray Psalm 23 everyday, and the part that gets me going on this theme is verse 3:

"He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake." (AKJV).

Restoration is a process, and the process for everyone is different because of our different life experiences and sins. The second part of the verse says that the Lord will lead us in the paths of righteousness: the lifestyle of the inner man. Doing everything we need to do in obedience and faith in Him.

Why?

"For His name's sake." The Lord has a stake in how you turn out.

Don't get discouraged when you are tempted. It doesn't mean you are not saved. Repent and get back up. Don't be discouraged if you get sick. Ask God to heal you. This doesn't mean ignore doctors. The Lord can use doctors or perform a creative miracle. How He does it is up to Him: the Lord God is sovereign.

[Part 2 will address the Inner Man and Inner Healing]

Blessings to everyone

Interesting facts about the Bible

About the Bible ...

Chapters were not added to the Christian Bible until the 13th Century and verses not until
the 16th Century, according to BibleGateway.Com.

These historical facts offer good reasons to read more than one passage or verse in the Bible (Old and New Testaments) to understand what God is telling us about certain things and events.

Gateway calls Bibles published without these breaks in the text "reader Bibles."

What we have today is a lot better than what was available in the days of the early church, when they had limited access to scrolls, fragments of manuscripts, and or word-of-mouth accounts.

Next: Watch this site for the new series on Bible prophecy. The main prophetic messages in the Bible deal with the arrival of Messiah, Israel, the Return of Messiah in the End Times, the Christian church, and humanity in general. My prayer is that the series will bless and inspire you. Do share with others what you learn here.

Shalom!

Prayer and Praise, Part II - God is waiting for you

Part II: Prayer and Praise - God is waiting for you

Diana Washington Valdez
Faith Today Christian Ministries

Jesus is the light of the world.
Praise and thanksgiving ought to be central in the life of a Christian. If we understand, or have at least a good sense, of who God is, then we would be inclined to naturally, as an outgrowth of our faith in the Lord, want to render thanks and praise at every opportunity.

The Lord is “the” Creator of the universe.

Isaiah 6:1-3 (NLT)
1 “ It was in the year King Uzziah died[a] that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple.
Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. They were calling out to each other,
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies!
The whole earth is filled with his glory!”

It’s not hard to explain why I keep running into Christians that are leading defeated lives, barely hang onto for dear life, trying to stay steady until they die, or the Lord comes back (as in the Second Coming.) The problem is two-fold: the shepherds are not teaching their flocks what they need to know to lead victorious lives, and Christians are not taking responsibility for their spiritual education, a sort of spiritual laziness and a lack of information straight from the Bible, the Word or Rhema of God.

Hosea 4:5 [b] (NIV) “… my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.”

Worship and praise are not reserved just for church services, yet Christians tend to regard prayer (communication with God) as a time for us to present an endless list of wants and needs.

Or, how often do we rush a prayer up to heaven or actually ask someone else to pray for us, only whenever we find ourselves in a crisis mode? That’s all right. The Lord cares about us as a father cares about his children. But what is our relationship toward God like? Being a Christian is a lifestyle. It is not about setting aside an hour or so on Sundays or maybe another extra hour for a mid-week service, and then we forget about God until the next service. We have to admit it. This is typical modern Christianity in the United States.

I truly believe that if we start to think about everything we can thank Him for – (all good things come from above ), such as our life, health, families, jobs, school, homes (including apartment rentals), transportation (vehicles or public transportation or car pools), a church home, Christian fellowship/friends who also love the Lord, a pastor we respect, and the list goes on – we would adopt a more reverent attitude toward our heavenly Father and a heart filled with gratitude.

There are two things I’ve liked about services in predominantly African-American churches, and in some Pentecostal churches in rural areas: People in the congregation stand up to give thanks to the Lord for something specific in their lives, and to thank and praise Him publicly. This is scriptural. Testimony that gives glory and credit to God glorifies the Creator and puts life in perspective.

Revelation 12:11 (NKJV) “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”
Thanksgiving and praise matter
Psalm 100:4 (CJB) “Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
enter his courtyards with praise;
give thanks to him, and bless his name.”

This passage from the Book of Psalms provides us with a good illustration of how we are to approach the Lord. If we lived in the Old Testament days of the Jewish Temple, then we would know that we would enter the building complex first through the designated gates. That’s where we offer thanksgiving. Then, to proceed to the Temple courtyard, we would offer the sacrifice of praise. This process – of entering the Temple of God, was intended to show us the path to the inner sanctum – where the Holy of Holies or Presence of God resided. [Exodus, Chapters 28-30]

Back then, only the high priest who belonged to the Tribe of Levi could enter into the Holy of Holies, the innermost part of the temple, which was covered with a thick curtain or veil. He had to be clean, which came after following the prescribed purification process. If he dared entered the Holy of Holies with sin, then he would die. If anyone else other than the high priest went in, he or she too would die on the spot. The point being that no one in a sinful state could enter into the presence of a holy God.

It’s a good thing that all those measures set out in the Mosaic law were done away with as a result of the crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That’s the significance of why the veil was torn from top to bottom during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This supernatural event meant everyone would have access to the Lord. Through Jesus Christ, we can approach God the father.

Hebrews 10:19-22 (NIV) We have access

"19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,

20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water."

The eternally sinless Jesus Himself is our new High Priest.

Jesus has everything you need.
Do we repent first or offer thanksgiving and praise and then repent of our sins before we seek an audience with the Creator of the universe? Personally, I would repent first, asking the Holy Spirit to show me areas of my life that have not been yielded to the Lord and to shed light on any sins I need to confess and repent of. I believe Christians will enter into praise more freely and easily once they have cast off the weights of sins.

I then thank God for His gift of forgiveness and continue with worship and praise. How long you worship, and praise depends on the time you set aside for it. Some people can’t pray for more than 10 minutes, because they’re out of practice. If we understood, really understood that we would stand before the one and only Lord God Almighty, then it seems that we would want to linger there as long as possible.

If you’re not sure about what to pray for, then make a list before you start. Before you know it, you will be praying for 20 to 30 minutes. I would set aside at least an hour to spend with the Lord. And guess what? You don’t need the kind of special invite that only VIP’s receive from kings, queens and presidents … You have a reservation with the King of Kings whenever you choose to use it.

I highly recommend that you learn several praise and worship songs or choruses that you can sing at the drop of a hat, at home or during Bible studies or prayer meetings. In time, you will build up a good repertoire of praise and thanksgiving. Eventually, because of the Holy Spirit in you, praise and worship will come naturally, and during times like when you’re driving, walking for exercise, etc. Feeling blue? I can happen to anyone, but the joy of the Lord is the remedy.

Joy unspeakable

Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV) – “Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Proverbs 17:22 (NKJ) – “A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.”

I Peter 1:8 (KJV) “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:”

I once was stationed with the military overseas. Without planning it, two Christian brothers and I coincided on the steps outside the post chapel. It was late at night, and we were taking a break from the barracks. It was just the three of us. We started talking about the Lord and just fell into worship and praise at the chapel entrance. It was all impromptu, spontaneous.

Suddenly, and unexpectedly, the three of us felt what can only be described as a light current of electricity run through our bodies – very light but unmistakable. It came from the top. We were filled with a heavy dose of joy. I don’t know how else to describe it. It made use want to worship and praise even more fervently. We continued praising and thanking God for a while. I don’t think Ken, Dick and I will ever forget that experience.

I’m not suggesting for Christian to seek such experiences – we should seek the Lord and our experiences (if any result) should be based on scripture. Our emotions should not act as our guideposts. We should seek God, not experiences. Also, God is not into weirdness. We also know that anything can happen when the Holy Spirit is around. Anything. Anything good, that is.

Feeling down? Don’t feel like praising or worshiping? Accept the “divine exchange.” This is an expression that the late Derek Prince used. Trade in your down feelings for the Word of God that provides the opposite.

A well-known passage in the Book of Isaiah, which prophesied the ministry of the Messiah Jesus Christ, mentions several aspects of His ministry.

Isaiah 61:1-3 (NKJV)
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,

To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

You should attend church services yes, but you can enter the presence of God from anywhere, at home, at a retreat center, wherever. God is everywhere. We’re the ones that are missing in action.

To sum this up, we ought to approach the Lord with thanksgiving and with heartfelt praise. Once we realize ALL the things, we can be thankful for, then it will be easy to fall into praise.
What’s next?

You can present your petitions, for yourself and others. You can also – and should expect – an encounter with the Almighty. Such encounters are life-changing. You can ask Him for guidance and most anything else. You should also expect for Him to speak to you. How He does that is up to Him, through the Bible, in a still small voice, audible voice, in your thoughts, through others. Don’t expect a long list of things that He will communicate in one session. It’s not like you will get a scroll from heaven with various things – as in the days of the prophets in the Bible.

Again, nothing should contradict His revealed and written Word.

And don’t limit the Lord. Years ago, I was training to show movies at a military post theater. It was going to be a part-time job to kill time after duty hours. Out of the blue, a voice spoke to me asking, “What are you doing here?” I quit the theater and started a Bible study and time of fellowship at the overseas post chapel.

On another occasion, the Lord led me to start a Bible study in the downtown of the city I worked in. This time, the prompting was more subtle. I thought “OK “… “I didn’t know how or where this was supposed to happen. The downtown wasn’t exactly a hotbed of Christian spirituality. Very soon though, things came together. About a dozen of us held a Bible study, and even had a facility for it, and it continued for about a year. Among other things, we studied the Book of Revelation! I wasn’t exactly looking to do this, but I felt I had to obey God’s leading.

If you get caught up in the things of the world, in your job, in casual relationships or in other activities that take your attention away from the Lord, that still small voice will grow fainter or go quiet all together. That’s scary, not hearing from Him at all. It’s also the road to Christian mediocrity.

I shared these examples, so you don’t get freaked out when the Lord starts speaking to you, through the Bible or through such things as dreams and or visions, the still small voice or even an audible voice. He will find a way to get your attention. I’ve met Christians who’ve had visions that seemed to be from the Lord. Still, I can’t think of anything more exciting than serving the Lord in something He wants you to do - can you? Nothing compares.

Everything I’ve shared thus far merely scratches the surface of how we enter into the presence of God through thanksgiving and praise. The Lord will tell us more as we start to obey Him. It’s not all about ourselves. He is not ‘Santa Claus.’ It’s about how He may want to use us. The basics will help you get started.

For more advanced studies on these topics, I can recommend books by seasoned ministers like Joy Dawson, the Missionaries of Prayer, among others. [2] [3]

If you “do it” then you will grow in it. If you have any doubts, check out the Book of Acts and how the early Christians acted out their faith. They acted on the Great Commission. They encouraged and prayed for each other. They praised and worshiped God.

Christian prayer and praise workshop

How to pray

(Part I: Prayer and Praise/Christian Ministry Workshop)

Courtesy graphic.
There is one ministry that most everyone can do, regardless of whether
- You live in a country where persecution is the order of the day, - You are a caretaker and cannot get out of the house
- You have a disability that limits your mobility
- You consider yourself "too young" or "too old" - no such thing!
- You are from another country than the one you live in
- Etc., etc.

I will share a few tips that will help you become a more effective "prayer warrior:"

To begin with, prayer is communicating with God. But how do we approach the most holy Creator of the Universe? With reverence and humility. Here is a fuller map or outline of how we can become serious prayer warriors:

- You must make Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior of your life, with absolute surrender, no holding back anything. This is the starting point for your life to change.

I John 2:2 - "He [Jesus Christ] is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world."

You can find more details about God's "rescue plan" at https://www.gotquestions.org/plan-of-salvation.html

- Ask the Holy Spirit to show you areas of your life that you have not surrendered to the Lord. Believe me, the Holy Spirit is very thorough. It's important to repent of sins (don't hold onto any of them; it's not worth it), and the Holy Spirit might even lead you to make restitution where possible and to ask others for forgiveness. Your healing may depend on obeying the leading to the best of your ability.

Psalm 66:18 - "If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;"

Matthew 5:23-24 (NIV) - "23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift."

See more on this at https://billygraham.org/…/seek-the-forgiveness-of-those-yo…/

- Some of these things may apply even if you have been a Christian for sometime, for years.

The best way to jump start your Christian walk is to seek God's help on what He wants you to do.

- Seek the help of mature (mature in the faith) Christians if you have lingering issues that you have had trouble overcoming. James 5:14-16 (NIV)

"14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."

If you have access to a professional Christian counselor, then take advantage of that opportunity and make an appointment. If not, then remember that one of the Lord's names is "Counselor." Get with other believers, be honest , and ask them to pray with and for you.

We cannot pray effectively for others if we ourselves are weighed down with a multitude of unresolved issues.

I'll mention an example here: A member of a prayer team that I am familiar with happened to mention one day that (the team member will remain unnamed) was suicidal. I thought to myself 'what???!!' I prayed for this team member and recommended to this team member to follow up with a church counselor.

[We can have "wounded" prayer warriors, same as wounded warriors from combat, but wounded in spirit. Proverbs 8:14 (NLT) "The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit?" If you're a wounded prayer warrior, don't hesitate to get help for healing ....]

Another example from another church family is a young woman who wanted to serve the Lord and was involved with a married man at the church she attended. Both of them found it comfortable to attend the same church, and for some reason, did not see (then) a reason to end the relationship.

Repentance is a regular event for Christians. We must stayed "prayed up" and be walking in the light we have with the faith we have at the time. Otherwise, we're just causing others to stumble and are setting a poor example of what "victory in Jesus" is all about.

Being in Christian fellowship is very important for encouragement and accountability. I am fortunate that I have Christian friends that I was able to turn to as my "accountability committee." Amen! I praise God for that privilege.

Look, I once stood in front of a bunch of strangers (though most of them knew who I was), probably more than a 100 people, to confess a certain sin. The service called on those sitting there to do so if they felt led ... Well, I got up there and died a thousand deaths before I blurted out what I wanted help with. I don't recommend this process for everyone, but I felt then that it was important to break the hold the sin had on me and to stop being a hypocrite.

Did it help? Yes, but you still have to stay prayed up and repent of whatever you may start doing that is not pleasing to the Lord.

Out of His mercy, later on God literally plucked me up from a situation that was perilous. I have so much more over the course of my life thus far to be thankful for to the Lord. How can I not serve Him with every ounce of my being? I shared this personal tidbit to encourage someone out there! And, to bring Glory to God! He is able!

- Read and study Bible verses about prayer and faith (this should be an ongoing process) before you get started on praying for others, before embarking on the prayer of intercession.

We get our issues fixed, and then we can focus on others. There's an old hymn called "Trust and Obey" that says "Trust and obey, For there's no other way, to be happy in Jesus, But to trust and obey."

The Lord has already done the hard work - through his crucifixion, death and resurrection - and so we can turn to Him as children with simple faith and trust.

The next segment will deal with the aspect of praise, which is fundamental to how we approach God, the Creator of the Universe. Praise tends to get short shrift. Thanksgiving and

Praise - that how we approach the Lord before we present our list of petitions. More details on that next, along with some tips on praise music ...

Psalm 100:4 (KJV) "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."

Start building up your repertoire of praise songs - some are short choruses that are easy to memorize and sing at home or in Bible studies, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kgQNT6MIIw

See the order, thanksgiving at the gates, and praise inside the courts as we get closer ...

Shalom!
