Whether to delete social media accounts

To delete or not to delete? That was the question.

The Rev. Diana Washington-Valdez/Faith Today Christian Ministries

I've been debating whether to delete one of my Twitter accounts, the one devoted to news and political commentary, same with the other Facebook news page.

Just when I get ready to do it, I come across someone (usually a stranger) who is asking for prayer, or someone who is reaching out to the digital world for support. That's happened more than once on the non-ministry pages.

At least for now, I will maintain both Facebook and Twitter accounts. I know that personal fellowship is best, but in this day and age, those of us on social media may be the only way others have to reach out for help, prayer or an encouraging word.

Social media is not a substitute, and I try to encourage people to join a church community or find fellowship with Christians where they live who will pray with and for them.

The God of the Universe is not limited by space, time, church buildings, or social media platforms.

Praise song with lyrics

Psalm 99:1-5 (NIV)

"The Lord reigns,
let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake.

2 Great is the Lord in Zion;
he is exalted over all the nations.

3 Let them praise your great and awesome name—
he is holy.

4 The King is mighty, he loves justice—
you have established equity;
in Jacob you have done
what is just and right.

5 Exalt the Lord our God
and worship at his footstool;
he is holy."

Proclaim your health with God's Word

Proclaim your health with God's Word every day:

Proverbs 3:7-8 (NIV)

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord and shun evil.

8 This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.

Proverbs 4:20-22 (NIV)

20 My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words.

21 Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;

22 for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body.

James 5:13-15 (NIV)

13 Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone happy? He should sing songs of thanks to God.

14 Is anyone among you sick? He should send for the church leaders and they should pray for him. They should pour oil on him in the name of the Lord.

15 The prayer given in faith will heal the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

The Lord is sovereign. He can use doctors to heal us, He can heal us miraculously and instantaneously, or He can heal us miraculously gradually. He can combine medical care with His healing touch. However it's done, thank Him!

Prayer leads to breakthroughs and ought to be a lifestyle

Prayer leads to breakthroughs and ought to be a lifestyle

Diana Washington Valdez/Faith Today Christian Ministries

Regular prayers

 Greetings!

I'm adding to my regular daily prayer power pack (the Our Father, Psalm 23 and the Armor of God/Ephesians 6: 10-18) - three other basic daily prayers that members of the Jewish nation prays - from Numbers 15:37-41, Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21.

Jesus Christ, who was raised in a Jewish home, probably prayed them, too. They form part of the Jewish liturgical prayers known as the "Shema."

We can tell from these Bible passages that prayer was meant to be a lifestyle, not something relegated to a few quick prayers said during services once a week. For victory and blessings, dive into the written word of God. Make His promises yours.

Let's go there now:

Numbers 15:37-41 (NLT) -

"37 Then the Lord said to Moses,

38 “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: Throughout the generations to come you must make tassels for the hems of your clothing and attach them with a blue cord.

39 When you see the tassels, you will remember and obey all the commands of the Lord instead of following your own desires and defiling yourselves, as you are prone to do.

40 The tassels will help you remember that you must obey all my commands and be holy to your God.

41 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt that I might be your God. I am the Lord your God!”

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NLT) -

"4 Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.[a]

5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.

6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.

7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

8 Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.

9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Deuteronomy 11:13-21 (NLT) -

"13 If you carefully obey the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the Lord your God and serve him with all your heart and soul,

14 then he will send the rains in their proper seasons—the early and late rains—so you can bring in your harvests of grain, new wine, and olive oil.

15 He will give you lush pastureland for your livestock, and you yourselves will have all you want to eat.

16 “But be careful. Don’t let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the Lord and serve and worship other gods.

17 If you do, the Lord’s anger will burn against you. He will shut up the sky and hold back the rain, and the ground will fail to produce its harvests. Then you will quickly die in that good land the Lord is giving you.

18 “So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.

19 Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

21 so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors."

Blessings to all of you.

Jesus Christ is the original "disruptor"

Jesus Christ is the original "disruptor"

Diana Washington Valdez/Faith Today Christian Ministries
A replica of Noah's Ark. Noah was a big disruptor.
These days we often hear or read about new businesses and or entrepreneurs that are disrupting entire industries with their innovations. Some of them are portrayed in positive terms as mavericks.

When Jesus Christ began his earthly ministry, he turned things upside down in the faith circles of those days. His strongest opposition came from religious leaders, such as the Pharisees.
They criticized him for healing on the Sabbath - oh my, we don't do good on the Sabbath, and for mingling with sinners - Jesus said he came for the lost, not the righteous.

Though he was the son of God (God the son), he asked John the Baptist to baptize him in the Jordan River. None of his encounters with women were ever in any way misogynistic, and he instructed his surprised disciples to permit children to approach him. His first recorded miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding celebration, after his mother Mary asked him for help.

He fasted and prayed for 40 days before he publicly proclaimed - announced - that he was about to fulfill God's rescue plan for humanity.

Luke 4:17-19 (NIV)

"17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,

19
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. [a]"

After Jesus ascended to heaven, God poured out his Holy Spirit on the disciples who waited in the Upper Room for this promise to be fulfilled, and the "disruption" continued and spread as the empowered followers of Jesus Christ scattered and took the Gospel to the four corners of the world. We will witness another massive disruption on a global scale with the next promised outpouring of his Holy Spirit.

“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions." - Joel 2:28 (NIV)

God's movement will not be contained within the walls of church buildings, it will not be constrained by pointless denominational doctrines, and it will not be limited by ethnicity, gender or age. We can stand to one side and watch it happen, or we can be a part of it.

Exciting times lie ahead for the followers of Jesus Christ. For some, it may include severe persecution and martyrdom (This already happens in other parts of the world). We need to get ready NOW; waiting until the last minute might not give us a chance to get in the serving line.

"For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will." - Matthew 24:44 (NIV)

"He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.”

Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!" - Revelation 22:20 (NKJV)

Shalom!

A call to consecration for breakthroughs: Nov. 15

A call to consecration and breakthroughs: Nov. 15

Read the Bible online in different versions and languages.
Bible Gateway is a free service. Bible online

The Rev. Diana Washington Valdez/Faith Today Christian Ministries

"Then he said, "Don't be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer." Daniel 10:12 (NLT)

The prophet Daniel, a tested and true servant of God, offers us a good model of consecration

Beginning Thursday, Nov. 15, you are invited to take part in a 21-day fast and prayer session. For those who wish to participate, the fast involves skipping at least one meal a day. It's up to you if you want to do more and can.

I don't recommend skipping breakfast. People with diabetes can modify their fast according to their health requirements. No beer or wine (except wine during Communion/the Lord's Supper).

We will agree to pray at least 15 minutes each day, ideally three times a day, 5-minutes each.

We will read from the Bible every day; at least read the scriptures that get posted on this site, or read from online Bible websites.

The purpose of this fast-and--prayer session will be to bring before the Lord our petitions for the healing of others, the salvation of loved ones, and any other requests that seem difficult.
We will ask the Lord to help us develop a closer walk with Him, to increase our faith, and to release us from anything that is hindering our spiritual growth.

We will also pray for the peace of Jerusalem and for all nations.

Different churches and congregations conduct 21 days of consecration at different times of the year and for different reasons. This particular session is being offered for those of you, including those of you in other countries, that do not have an opportunity to benefit from the shared and collective prayers of others.

The Book of Daniel in the Old Testament describes how Daniel's answer to prayer was hindered for three weeks until an angel of the Lord - the angel Michael - fought off the spiritual principality that was blocking the answer from Heaven. From our reading, we also know that Daniel prayed three times a day during the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish nation. He also fasted for 21 days.

There is nothing magical about the 21 days or three times a day; there is no such thing as superstition-based "powerful prayers," chain letters, and so forth. There is only our faith in the Lord who can do all things.

God yearns to bless His children, but He cannot do this if we are living in intentional disobedience, have stopped seeking Him, or have gotten off the track for other causes.

If you have something major you need help with, and are serious about turning to the Lord, then this session is for you.

*The other aspect to add is that during this session we will find ways to donate or help others, at least once during the period. Give to your church or a favorite charity. Or, donate clothing and other items to Candlelighters, the Rescue Mission of El Paso, or other similar organizations, visit a shut-in, etc.; the point is to think of others besides ourselves. Self-centeredness, and I have been guilty of that, is one of our biggest failings in the society we live in today.

Do your acts of charity in private before the Lord. Don't post them or boast about them on social media.

Every day of the session, I will be posting scriptures that support what is in this post.

I will also be praying for you.

Write down your requests and present them to the Lord. If you would like prayer; just post or message me, saying you would like prayer.

Expect a breakthrough! Be ready for some big things to happen in your life.

- Shalom

** Some of you live in places where you cannot openly pray and worship, much less ask publicly for prayer. You can still participate and get others (friends, family) to join with you. Knowing that everyone has needs and faces problems, I will still pray for you in the Name of Jesus. God loves you and I do, too. Be blessed!

The right kind of faith to walk a victorious Christian life

The Bible teaches the right kind of faith we need

to live a victorious Christian life

Diana Washington Valdez/Faith Today Christian Ministries

A Bible passage to proclaim:

Deuteronomy 33:25-27

25  "The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,
and your strength will equal your days.

26  “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun*,
who rides across the heavens to help you
and on the clouds in his majesty.

27  The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.
He will drive out your enemies before you,
saying, ‘Destroy them!’"

[*Israel]

Praying the Word out loud over others and ourselves on a regular basis is a good way to begin building up our faith.

Here are a couple of important points about "faith,' especially because I believe in "hands-on" Christianity: By faith, we do not mean "faith in faith," "having a faith," or "faith in anything." Bible-based faith means believing God's revealed Word and at the same time it means believing Him, the God who stands behind His Word.

We tend to fall short in the faith department because we often don't get to the point of actually believing Him for our everyday and long-term needs. We get "saved," and we understand that Jesus Christ saves us eternally, and try to hang in there until we all get to heaven. We don't grow beyond our salvation, and as the years go by, we may get discouraged.

This happens for two reasons: We don't receive the kind of Bible teaching that helps us to lead victorious lives, or we fall into disobedience. To use a sports analogy, the results are the same; we get "benched" or "side-lined," and continue to trek on in spiritual mediocrity. You don't have to settle for less than the Father's best for us.

As you study the Bible, keep in mind that God cannot lie. He would not state things in His written Word that He does not mean. Because of His unimpeachable character, we can take God at His Word. Our faith has an object and the object of our faith is God Himself.

Numbers 23:19 -

"God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?

Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?" (ESV)

Romans 10:17 - "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (KJV)

God bless each and everyone of you. I am praying for you. Love you in Jesus!

- Shalom!

The remnant: Believers who won't give up on the Lord

The Remnant?

The believers who won't give up on the Lord

"Then at last the Lord Almighty will Himself be Israel's crowning glory. He will be the pride and joy of the remnant of His people." - Isaiah 28:5

Diana Washington Valdez/FTCM

Does this scripture mean that the Lord did not expect more than a remnant of His nation to continue following Him? Or, for their faith to fail in the face of wars, persecutions and other adversities?

The same questions apply today to Christians, the Gentiles that were spiritually grafted into the family of Abraham. The scriptures in the New Testament describe a major "falling away" before the return of Jesus Christ.

Will we be part of the remnant that takes pride and joy in the Lord? The time to do something about it is now, not at the last minute. Doing something means building up and maturing in the faith.

I encounter many Christians who still carry a lot of baggage from their former lives, including unprocessed pain. They are in need of healing and other things. But, they don't know how to go about it. They never grew beyond choosing to become a Christian. There is help, so please ask. Plug into a Bible-centered church that offers discipleship training, pray daily and read the Word of God.

These days, we have numerous online tools available to learn how to grow in the faith, and it's smart to take advantage of them. It's also very important to fellowship with other Christians who can pray for and with you, and encourage you in your walk with the Lord.

Some believers who live in remote regions of the world where persecution is a way of life will obtain God's grace to help them find the things they need to grow strong. (To readers in other parts of the world - I am praying for you! Do not give up.)

2 Thessalonians 2:1-3 (KJV) -

(1) Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
  (2) That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

(3) Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

(Notes: The 'man of lawlessness' refers to the antichrist.)

The Hebrew language and the End Times

The Jewish Holy Scriptures

The Hebrew language and the End Times

Diana Washington Valdez/FTCM

I recently received a complimentary copy of the Jewish Holy Scriptures containing the first five books of the Bible in the Old Testament and the Psalms.

The introduction mentions a Jewish tradition that Joshua had the scriptures translated into 70 known languages of his time to permit the rest of the world to read God's revealed Word for themselves.

There is another supposition that the translations, or later translations, were intended for Jews who were scattered beyond Israel.

I also learned that except for liturgical purposes and prayer, Hebrew was considered a dead language (dead from daily common disuse) until the late 19th Century. The revival of the Hebrew language began in 1881, according to an article in the Jerusalem Post, with Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. J-Post article

Some students of Jewish history consider the revival of Hebrew as one of the important events pointing to the "end times." This is in addition to the creation of Israel as a nation in 1948. It's probably true. The Lord is restoring all things.

Christian Bible colleges and other institutions include Hebrew in their curriculums for religious studies degrees or certifications.

What language did God use when He spoke to Moses and the prophets?

It is possible that Hebrew will become the new universal language at the return of the Messiah, whom Christians believe is Jesus Christ.

Others have weighed in on the side of a possible universal language based on these prophetic words found in Zephaniah 3:9 -

"For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent."

That's something to think about.

We certainly live in exciting times.

Healing and proclaiming God's Word

Praying for healing?

Proclaim God's Word to yourself and others:

"I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord." - Psalm 118:17

Diana Washington Valdez/FaithToday Christian Ministries

Today (Wednesdays) is set aside for focused praying and fasting. There are several posts on people's social media pages expressing prayer needs for healing. Please pray for everyone concerned.

The Lord recently convicted me of falling into some negativity. We cannot have negative thoughts (such as pessimism) and claim to have faith. It is one or the other.

As we continue to seek a closer walk with the Lord, He will continue to show us areas of our life where we need to repent and commit or recommit to do His will. From my recent training, I will share some key points to getting our prayers answered:

* We must forgive others. (I've shared this before but it bears repeating for those who haven't heard it, been taught it or haven't obeyed it." Matthew 6:12 "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."

Jesus taught this principle when He showed his disciples how to pray. We cannot expect God to forgive us if we refuse to forgive others, no matter who or what was involved. The lack of forgiveness hinders your prayers and may hinder your own healing.

* Faith versus positive thinking. Our faith is in God and His promises. Negative thinking looks at what God has not done yet instead of what He said He will do. If you have been praying for someone, do not be discouraged because he or she has not turned around yet; keep praying and committing them to God.

- Galatians 6:9 " And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."

* Faith comes through hearing God's Word, not by reading "positive thinking" books or social media platitudes. Stay actively engaged in the Word. Don't wait until the church weekly service. Feed and nourish your spirit every day.

Romans 10:17 - "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Read Bible verses aloud to yourself. That is, proclaim the Word of God and actively reject the lies of the enemy that may have taken root in your life.

Shalom!

Social media is no subsitute for real friends and Christian fellowship

Social media "friends," "followers" are no substitutes for genuine fellowship.
Faith Today Christian Ministries

I regularly come across posts expressing disappointment in Facebook "friends" or other social media-type "followers," because they don't appear to really care or don't take time out to respond to every message you post.
I've said it before and will keep on repeating it. Please do not view social media users as your friends. Some of them may be people you know, and may actually be your real friends or supporters.
Social media is a tool of communication, and it can be used to connect people. Some people are genuinely seeking to share helpful or encouraging information with others.
There are also some who are con artists and who disguise themselves with fake names and fake accounts and fake personal histories.
I understand that some people are stuck in their homes because of health reasons, or feel isolated because the friends and family they once had are no longer around (in the same city).
Please connect with a good church that encourages fellowship, and make new friends. Some church members can check up on you and pray for you. Some churches offer their services online, and there are many reasons to take advantage of the good use of social media.
Do Not advertise on social media if you live alone - Ever!
Be careful about posting details about your health concerns ... insurance companies in the future can use the information against you (preconditions).
Be wise about what you post, or use email or similar formats to share details with those you know are actually going to pray for you. Prayer help may be a phone call away through a church that actively prays for others.

There is no 'easy Christianity,' Jesus Christ made it clear

Jesus Christ made it clear that there no such thing as an easy Christian walk
"Easy Christianity" doesn't exist. If that were the case, then Jesus Christ would not have said in Matthew 16:24-26 (ESV):

"(24) Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (25) For whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"

Diana Washington Valdez
Faith Today Ministries

Following Jesus gets easier once we die/give up our selfish ambitions and desires, and trade them in for God's best for us. Many Christians will miss out on the victorious life, and fail to grow and mature spiritually, by hanging on to the same old habits that drag them down.

The Lord longs to bless his sons and daughters; but, He is a holy God and we cannot realistically expect Him to bless us if we continue living disobedient lives. Feel-good messages from positive-thinking (only) preachers are no substitute for repentance. If you wonder why the blessings of God's promises aren't flowing, then we need look no further than the mirror.

Hebrews 12:14 (NLT) - Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord."

And then see -

Romans 12:1 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."

I heard a Bible teacher put this in a very clear and simple way - from the Bible verse - and that is to place our bodies on the altar of God. We can offer ourselves up to God, who made us, or we can continue serving the devil with our bodies and the rest of our faculties.

There is no in between. We have one thing we can offer God - ourselves, our bodies. Use mind, soul and body to serve Him. We are ALL called to serve Him.

Find out from the Lord what exciting adventure He has in store for you. Don't settle for getting by until the rapture or whatever, or for mediocrity; ask Him for what He really wants to give you. That is the only thing that will really fulfill you.

Blessings to everyone,
Shalom

The new Babylonian captivity is approaching: Seek the Lord's protection

The new Babylonian captivity is approaching: Seek the Lord's protection
"Your words are what sustain me. They bring me great joy and are my heart's delight, for I bear Your name, O Lord God Almighty." - Jeremiah 15:16
"That is why we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper, so I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?" - Hebrews 13:6
Diana Washington Valdez
Faith Today Ministries
I have many personal experiences of near-death and dangerous situations over the course of my life, and looking back on some of these things, I can say without a doubt that the Lord protected me. The proof is that I'm here today.
Sometimes He used others to warn me of certain perils, other times He intervened to save me from certain death. No kidding.
The Lord has His reasons for keeping us alive, and for taking some of us sooner. He knows best, and only He has the big picture, as well as the historical view of our lives and of the generations.
Jeremiah is one of my favorite prophets in the Old Testament. He was imprisoned, beaten, ridiculed and ignored for the divine messages he delivered to others who did not want to listen.
In the Book of Jeremiah, we can read that Jeremiah complained to the Lord about the mistreatment, and the Lord responded by letting him know that He would protect him.
The Lord also made it clear that Jeremiah would not necessarily be spared the pain and suffering stemming from his service as a faithful prophet. The Lord even told Jeremiah to be prepared because worse things were about to happen to him. I can just imagine Jeremiah thinking, "Lord, you're killing me."
It appears that the prophets Jeremiah, Ezequiel and Daniel were contemporaries - there was some overlap in their ministries - during the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish nation during the peak of the Babylonian Empire's power. Yet, the Lord had different roles for each of these three men to serve out in that era. Daniel, for example, served in the palace during most of his ministry.
Whatever the Lord calls us to do, He will equip us to do it. We can be like Jonah, trying to evade our responsibilities in our service to the Lord, and thereby suffer the consequences; or, we can cooperate fully with Him and be faithful like Daniel and the others.
We can't fight God, that's for sure; it's a losing proposition. And, He doesn't need us to accomplish His purposes. Yet, what a privilege it is to serve as co-laborers with Him and with each other.
I believe we are entering a new phase of Babylonian captivity. It goes beyond the physical captivity of a powerful earthly empire. It will include widespread idolatry and it will have a worldwide impact.
We know that the Book of Revelation describes a certain "Babylon," one that we must avoid and which the Lord Himself will destroy.

Chapter 18 in Revelation describes the fall of Babylon, and in verses 4 and 5 we are told to come out of her:

Then I heard another voice calling from heaven,
“Come away from her, my people.
Do not take part in her sins,
or you will be punished with her.
For her sins are piled as high as heaven,
and God remembers her evil deeds. (NLT)

Come what may, our path is clear, and it is to trust and obey the Lord.
Shalom!

Idolatry in the 21st Century Part III: Consecration and the 'selfie generation'

Idolatry in the 21st Century: Part III

(* 2017 article is timely Idolatry on the rise )

Consecration and the “selfie generation”

Diana Washington Valdez/Faith Today Ministries

Wikipedia offered the best, most succinct definition of narcissism: “The pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's own attributes.”

Taking a selfie photo. [Courtesy]
Narcissism is another form of idolatry, one that can linger on when we fail to consecrate ourselves to the Lord.

Consecration is not just for people who have a calling to full time ministry; it is the lifestyle of a committed Christian.

Attributes that humans most admire about themselves include physical beauty, athletic prowess, artistic abilities and a high intellectual capacity. All of these in themselves are not bad; they are gifts, and God intended for us to use one or more of these gifts to serve Him and others. They can open doors to professions that bless those who possess these attributes.

Another way to describe narcissism is that it is an exorbitant self-love that stems from a delusion about one’s self-worth. This is what happened to lucifer, an angel before he became known as Satan. The Books of Ezekiel and Isaiah narrate his fall.

Ezekiel 14:12-14 (NLT)

12 “How you are fallen from heaven,
O shining star, son of the morning!
You have been thrown down to the earth,
you who destroyed the nations of the world.
13 For you said to yourself,
‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars.
I will preside on the mountain of the gods
    far away in the north.
14 I will climb to the highest heavens
and be like the Most High.’”

Ezekiel 28: 17 (KJV)

17 Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty;
 you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor;
I cast you to the ground,
I laid you before kings, that they might gaze at you. (KJV)

Satan’s self-idolatry led to a revolt against God, a rebellion that caused him to be expelled from heaven, along with the other angels that followed a lie.

Jesus Christ Luke 10:17-18 (NIV)

“17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said,
“Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

When Satan, in the form of a serpent, tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden, he suggested that she could become “like God” if she ate the fruit of the tree that God had forbidden to her and Adam.

We can infer from the passage that Satan likely appealed to or provoked spiritual pride in Eve – to be like God – and thus, tempted her to sin. He also knew, from studying and observing the coupe - that he could probably get Adam to fall by causing Eve to sin first.

Genesis 3:1-5 (NIV)

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.
“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

This is why we must walk in humility, always. (Proverbs 16:18 (NLT) “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.”)

Narcissism also can infect entire cultures and even Christian ministries. * The ancient Greeks, who self-absorbed with their intellect and bodies, serve to illustrate an example of pervasive narcissism.

In fact, the legend about Narcissus, with its symptoms and consequences, came to us from Greek mythology. He was a character who fell in love with himself after gazing his reflection in a pool of water.

Eventually, as the story goes, he was transformed into the flower known as narcissus. The Greeks were astute enough to recognize that excessive self-adulation was a real weakness but did not know how to apply the remedy: humility. For this, we need God’s help.

The “selfie” age

In our digital era, social media pushes people to promote themselves, sometimes as a way to compete with others for jobs or other kinds of positions.

For narcissists, social media platforms are tools to exploit. Digital audiences not knowing any better encourage them with constant flattery. (At the opposite end are people suffering from low-esteem who come to depend on digital “likes” from “followers” to boost their egos.)

Developing a healthy sense of self-worth is necessary for maturity. Our identity, however, must be based on what God says about our relationship to Him. It must be based on Biblical truth.

Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

“So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.”

We have to remember that in our fallen nature, we cannot love others correctly. The corruption that is inherent in our sinful natures renders us incapable of loving God and others as we ought to.

Salvation comes first, along with the ongoing renewal of our minds, which is the work of the Holy Spirt as we yield to the Lord in this process.

We can cooperate with the Lord to develop the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

Galatians 5: 22-23 (NKJV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Romans 8:13 (NIV)

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
The Lord’s call on our lives is absolute
Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation, lived in Ur and his father was an idol-maker when God called him to leave his father’s home and follow Him.

Genesis 12: 1-2 (NIV)

“The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country,
your people and your father’s household
to the land I will show you.
“I will make you into a great nation,
    and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.

God calls us to a life of separation from the world.

II Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV)

“Therefore
Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”

Luke 14:26 (NKJV)

“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.”

Obviously, Jesus Christ did not call us to detest our friends and family. He made the point that He must come before all others. We cannot use our friends and families to avoid His call to salvation or discipleship.

e must b
God must occupy the throne of our hearts. As we learn more about God and His wonderful character, we will naturally want to do this. God is God, and there is no other like Him. To do otherwise, is to settle for mediocrity in our Christian walk.

If this is an area you are struggling with, and all of us to some extent have or are, then turn to the Lord: Repent and ask for healing. Ask other believers who are mature in the faith to pray with you.

John 8:36 (NIV)

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

May your journey in the Lord be truly blessed and joyful. To God be the glory!
